Sliding CT

Sliding CT, also known as sliding computed tomography or spiral CT, is a modern imaging technique that combines advanced technology in computed tomography (CT) with continuous rotation of the x-ray tube and detector. This method is commonly used in medical imaging to obtain detailed images of various body structures, including organs, tissues, and bones.

Key Features of Sliding CT
  1. Continuous Data Acquisition:
    • Unlike traditional CT, where images are taken slice by slice at discrete intervals, sliding CT continuously captures as the x-ray source rotates around the patient. This allows for rapid image acquisition and better coverage.
  2. Helical Scanning:
    • The term “sliding” often refers to helical or spiral scanning techniques where the patient moves through the scanner while it rotates continuously. As a result, a helix-shaped path is created in three-dimensional space.
  3. Improved Image Quality:
    • Sliding CT generates high-resolution images with greater detail than traditional methods due to its ability to capture overlapping slices without gaps between them.
  4. Faster Examination Times – The continuous nature of sliding CT allows for quicker scans compared to older techniques, reducing motion artifacts caused by breathing or other movements during image acquisition.
  5. Multi-Planar Reconstruction (MPR):
    • Images obtained from sliding CT can be reconstructed into different planes (axial, coronal, sagittal) after acquisition without needing additional scans.
Applications
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Commonly used for visualizing various conditions affecting internal organs such as tumors, infections, trauma injuries, and vascular diseases.
  • Treatment Planning: Particularly useful in oncology for planningotherapy by accurately locating tumors and surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Guided Procedures: Assists interventional radiologists during biopsies or catheter placements by providing real-time imaging guidance.
Advantages
  • Greater speed and efficiency compared to conventional CT scanning.
  • Enhanced detail due to continuous data collection leads to improved diagnostic capabilities.
  • Ability to create 3D visualizations of anatomical structures which aids in surgical planning and intervention strategies.
